The website HowToGeek has a cool infographic that has all sorts of facts of coffee compared to tea. Health benefits of each, caffeine, etc. For example, did you know that adding milk to your tea may decrease or eliminate the benefits tea has in preventing cancer? Cool stuff. Coffee vs. Tea
Starbucks Blonde Roast
Well I’m sure by now you’ve seen Starbucks advertising their new blonde roast coffee. They’ve been pushing this hard, samples in the stores, etc. So how is it? If you’re a regular Starbucks drinker, you’ll certainly find it different. If you’re one of those people who jokingly refer to Starbucks as “Starburnt” in reference to their dark roasted coffees, you’ll probably love this new blonde roast. It’s a really, really light roast and if that’s your thing, it’s worth giving a try.
How coffee helps prevent skin cancer
There are so many articles touting health benefits of coffee that it begins to sound like snake oil at times, but there really does seem to be solid science behind the claims. One of recent times was that coffee, or rather the caffeine therein, is associated with a decreased risk of developing skin cancer. Problem was, scientists couldn’t explain WHY. Until now. Turns out that caffeine basically makes a cell more likely to die if it’s been damaged by UV, thus reducing the chance of those cells fully developing into skin cancer. Caffeine can also absorb UV directly if added to sunscreen. Read more over at SmartPlanet.
Grow your own coffee
Before you get too excited, know that growing your own coffee can be very difficult depending on where you live, I speak from experience! Still, even if you never end up with a giant fruit-producing tree, smaller coffee plants are still beautiful houseplants and great conversation starters. I came across a nice starter kit over at ThinkGeek, which is essentially just a small greenhouse and seeds. It’s reasonably priced at $10, though you could also make your own similar setup with parts from your local hardware store. Fun gift for coffee lovers!
Precision-controlled espresso machine
The popular website Kickstarter is proving to be a great way for entrepreneurs to launch product ideas, and the latest that caught my eye there is this new espresso machine. It uses a PID controller to more precisely regulate the temperature of the water (or steam, depending on what’s desired). It’s a great idea, and the huge level of support on Kickstarter so far shows there’s demand and enthusiasm for this…though bringing a complex product like this to market is no small feat and I remain a bit skeptical of its success. I do wish them the best though…I’d love to see more high tech, affordable espresso machines on the market (and on my kitchen counter!). Check it out at their Kickstarter page.
KonaRed energy drink
The fruit of the coffee cherries, previously discarded as waste in pursuit of the precious seed inside, has found a new usefulness as the main ingredient in a new energy drink, KonaRed. The fruit is said to be rich in antioxidants and nutrients.
